When Communities Can No Longer Access Justice: The EACOP Case Becomes a Global Symbol of the Fight for Human Rights and Environmental Accountability

Voix du Paysan – Informing and empowering citizens through a commitment to social and climate justice.

When communities affected by large-scale oil projects face barriers to having their voices heard, the courts often become the last line of defense against impunity. The legal proceedings surrounding the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) have now moved far beyond an ordinary legal dispute. They raise fundamental questions about the ability of judicial systems to protect people, land, and the environment in the face of powerful economic interests.

For human rights organizations, including AFIEGO, this legal battle is an opportunity to reaffirm that development cannot be pursued at the expense of fundamental rights. The affected communities are primarily demanding respect for their rights to information, meaningful consultation, fair compensation, and a healthy environment—principles enshrined in numerous national and international legal frameworks.

The outcome of these proceedings could establish a landmark precedent for corporate accountability in transboundary infrastructure projects. Beyond EACOP itself, the case places a global spotlight on the responsibility of multinational corporations to prevent human rights violations and environmental harm throughout their operations and supply chains.

At a time of escalating climate crisis, the decisions handed down in this case will be closely watched far beyond East Africa. They serve as a reminder that a credible energy transition cannot ignore social justice or the rights of local communities. Genuine prosperity should not be measured solely in kilometers of pipeline or barrels of oil, but also by the willingness of governments and corporations to uphold accountability to the people they claim to serve.
