Servers or Citizens? The Eco-Social Assembly Warns: In Brazil, Drinking Water Is Being Sacrificed for Big Tech

Voix du Paysan: informing and empowering citizens in the fight for social and climate justice.

As the planet faces increasingly severe droughts, Brazil has made a controversial decision: granting tax breaks to global tech giants to build massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of water. These facilities, crucial to the digital economy, require constant cooling—drawing millions of liters of water from regions already facing water stress.

The Eco-Social Assembly, sounding the alarm, denounces this move as an economic blackmail disguised as a growth opportunity. Authorities promise jobs, but at what cost? Local ecosystems are under threat, groundwater is drying up, and communities face the risk of their vital resource being privatized. Worse, these projects benefit from tax exemptions, depriving the state of crucial public revenue.

Yet sustainable alternatives exist. The Eco-Social Assembly reminds us that technologies like immersion cooling, free-air systems, recycled water, and geothermal energy can drastically reduce environmental impact. Refusing to adopt them means prioritizing profit over fundamental human rights.

This is a call to action for environmentally conscious citizens: water belongs to life, not to servers. Water must remain a common good—protected, shared, and preserved. Brazil, and other nations considering similar paths, must draw a red line: no tech infrastructure should threaten people’s water sovereignty.
