EACOP: a controversial oil project between economic promises and allegations of major environmental and social violations in East Africa

Voix du Paysan’s role in training and informing citizens: a commitment to social and climate justice.

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project is facing growing opposition from human rights and environmental organizations. According to research by Climate Rights International, this megaproject is associated with multiple risks and negative impacts on local communities in Uganda and Tanzania. Among the main concerns are forced displacement of populations, the weakening of traditional livelihoods, and threats against environmental defenders and local activists.

On the social level, several reports highlight a climate of intimidation and pressure exerted on activists and communities opposing the project. The areas crossed by the pipeline are described as particularly vulnerable, where rural populations heavily depend on farmland and local ecosystems for their daily survival. Critics also denounce a lack of transparency in compensation and community consultation processes, fueling a sense of injustice and marginalization.

Finally, climate issues are central to the debate. Estimates suggest that EACOP could generate around 379 million tonnes of CO₂ over its lifetime, making it highly incompatible with global emissions reduction goals. In response to these concerns, many voices are calling for greater accountability from the actors involved and urging international mobilization under the slogan #KickPollutersOutOfAfrica, in order to protect ecosystems and the communities directly affected.
