Community Voice – August 2025: Soil dumping from an oil project affects over 30 households in Buhuka

The Farmer’s Voice to educate and inform citizens: a commitment to social and climate justice.

Residents of Nsunsu B and Kyabasambu villages, located in the Buhuka plains of Kikuube district, are raising an alarm. A subcontractor of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is accused of improperly dumping soil in 2023, which is now sliding onto private lands belonging to local communities.

The company, tasked with constructing drilling pads, access roads, and water points, dumped large volumes of soil in these villages. By 2025, the soil had spilled into gardens and homesteads, affecting more than 30 households. Families report the destruction of crops, erasure of land boundaries, and growing insecurity around their homes.

Despite the damage, no compensation has been provided to the affected households. Community members now fear food shortages and land degradation. They state that the situation threatens both their livelihoods and the environment. They have warned that legal action may be taken if the soil is not properly removed to prevent further harm.
