Community Voice – August 2025: CNOOC’s Kingfisher Oil Project Activities Threaten Lake Albert

The Farmer’s Voice to educate and inform citizens: a commitment to social and climate justice.

Communities living near Lake Albert in Kikuube District are sounding the alarm over oil exploitation activities carried out by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) under the Kingfisher project. They are denouncing the growing impacts of these activities on the lake. During the rainy season, wastewater from the Kingfisher oil camp reportedly flows into the lake, making the water turbid and polluted. This pollution is killing fish — a vital source of food and income for many families.

Fisherfolk also report visible changes in the color of the lake water. In some areas, fish can no longer survive. Lake Albert, considered one of Uganda’s most important fishing grounds, is now at risk of losing its richness. Locals fear the loss of both their livelihoods and the natural ecosystem that sustains them.

They are calling on the Ministry of Water and Environment to investigate and release a report on the causes of these changes. They are also urging the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to engage in dialogue with CNOOC to address the impact of its activities on Lake Albert.
