When Bees Become a Bulwark Against the Pipeline: AFIEGO’s Knowledge Exchange Charts an Alternative Development Path for Communities Affected by EACOP

Voix du Paysan – Informing and Empowering Citizens: A Commitment to Social and Climate Justice

As the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) continues to reshape the lives of affected communities, some people are choosing to turn adversity into opportunity. By bringing together women beekeepers from Kyakaboga and EACOP-affected communities in Greater Masaka, AFIEGO facilitated a knowledge exchange that goes far beyond technical training. The initiative reflects a vision of resilience built on local resources, shared experience, and community-driven solutions.

Beekeeping is increasingly emerging as a credible and sustainable alternative for diversifying household incomes in communities facing the social and economic impacts of extractive projects. Through the transfer of practical skills, these women demonstrate that environmental stewardship and economic empowerment can go hand in hand. Bees produce more than honey—they sustain biodiversity, strengthen ecosystems, and provide communities with a long-term livelihood that is far less dependent on extractive industries.

Beyond its economic significance, this exchange highlights the strategic leadership of women in driving ecological transitions. Their commitment shows that effective responses to climate and social challenges often arise from grassroots initiatives, where solidarity, traditional knowledge, and responsible natural resource management become the true engines of sustainable development.

At a time when the future of EACOP continues to spark intense debate across East Africa, AFIEGO’s initiative serves as a powerful reminder that another development model is both possible and necessary. Investing in local capacities, promoting nature-based livelihoods, and placing communities at the center of decision-making are essential pillars of a more just, inclusive, and genuinely sustainable future.
