Towards Sustainable Coffee in Idjwi: SOCOOAPI-CA Mobilizes Buyumbu Growers Against Climate and Agricultural Challenges

Voix du Paysan pour former et informer les citoyens : un engagement pour la justice sociale et climatique.

As part of its mission to support sustainable agricultural sectors, SOCOOAPI-CA organized a meeting with coffee growers from the village of Buyumbu, located in the Kihumba group, Idjwi territory. At the heart of the discussions were the multiple challenges facing producers, including soil degradation, the growing effects of climate change, deforestation, and water pollution. These constraints, which directly threaten the quality and profitability of production, require urgent and appropriate responses.

The organization highlighted several sustainable solutions: agroforestry, which consists of cultivating coffee under the shade of trees to protect biodiversity; improving soil through organic composting and crop rotation; crop diversification through the integration of productive gardens to secure income; and the selection of more resilient coffee varieties. These approaches not only help mitigate environmental impacts but also improve the economic resilience of local communities.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of SOCOOAPI-CA, Mr. Léonce Kinyunyi, praised the commitment of the producers while stressing the importance of promoting local consumption of quality coffee, the valorization of by-products, and the strengthening of local economies. Thanks to leaders like him, concrete solutions are emerging to build a greener and fairer future for Idjwi’s coffee growers.
