Silencing Uganda’s Youth: Justice Falters in the Face of the EACOP Disaster

Voix du Paysan stands to inform and empower citizens: a commitment to social and climate justice.

In Uganda, young people are rising with courage against the EACOP project (East African Crude Oil Pipeline), denounced as a large-scale climate crime. Yet instead of protecting these environmental defenders, the justice system is persecuting them. On August 19, 2025, twelve #StopEACOP youth activists appeared in court seeking bail — but once again, the case was not heard. This judicial silence only fuels growing outrage.

These activists, on the frontlines of the fight against environmental destruction, represent a conscious generation determined to defend their rights, land, and future. The EACOP project threatens to displace thousands, destroy fragile ecosystems, and increase greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, the young people standing in opposition are criminalized, harassed, and denied justice. This repression violates fundamental principles of human rights and freedom of expression.

We call for regional and international solidarity. The time has come to end the intimidation and cancel this ecocidal project. Climate justice requires listening to Africa’s youth, protecting them, and abandoning EACOP immediately.
