EACOP Back Before the Courts: Ugandan Farmers’ UK Lawsuit Could Redefine Environmental Accountability for Oil Giants

Voix du Paysan – Informing and Empowering Citizens for Social and Climate Justice

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project is facing renewed legal scrutiny. A group of Ugandan farmers has filed a lawsuit in the United Kingdom seeking to hold the companies involved in the project accountable under Uganda’s environmental, climate, and constitutional laws. The case reflects the growing use of transnational litigation by local communities seeking justice over the impacts of large-scale extractive projects.

At the heart of the lawsuit, the claimants argue that the project poses significant risks to agricultural land, livelihoods, water resources, and the rights of affected communities. They contend that commitments to environmental protection and the safeguarding of fundamental rights have not been fully upheld. The proceedings could help redefine the legal responsibilities of multinational corporations involved in projects with substantial environmental and climate impacts.

The legal action comes as EACOP remains one of Africa’s most controversial oil infrastructure projects. For several years, civil society organizations, environmental advocates, investors, and policymakers have debated the balance between economic development, energy security, and the protection of ecosystems. The pipeline has become a symbol of the broader global debate over whether new fossil fuel projects are compatible with international climate goals.

Regardless of the court’s final ruling, the case could establish an important precedent for other African communities seeking to assert their rights before foreign courts when international corporations are involved. It underscores that environmental challenges increasingly transcend national borders and that the governance of major energy projects is being scrutinized through the lenses of climate justice, corporate accountability, and the protection of local communities.
