Voix du Paysan to train and inform citizens: a commitment to social and climate justice
A fight for poisoned air, water, and land
In Rivers State, at the heart of the Niger Delta, communities have suffered for decades from the disastrous consequences of oil operations—especially leaking, aging pipelines and the continuous flaring of gas. The air is unbreathable, the soil contaminated, and the water unsafe to drink, threatening residents’ lives every day. Courage Nsirimovu, coordinator of the Pilex Centre for Civic Education Initiative, denounces a prolonged humanitarian and ecological catastrophe, where fundamental rights to health and a clean environment are being violated by major oil corporations.
A strategic partnership to strengthen the struggle
Accompanied by his colleague Victory Timizimor, program officer at Pilex, Courage travelled to Eugene, USA, as part of the ELAW fellowship. Together, they are collaborating with legal and scientific experts to develop concrete strategies to compel oil companies to finally take responsibility for environmental cleanup and repair. This international cooperation aims to strengthen local capacity and equip defenders to better protect community rights.
A glimmer of hope for Niger Delta communities
Through their courageous commitment and the support of international networks like ELAW, Courage and Victory seek to transform community anger into concrete action for justice. Their presence on the global stage amplifies the voices of the forgotten victims of oil extraction and fuels a movement for change that aims to restore dignity, health, and environmental balance to this vital region of Nigeria.
