Preserving Idjwi’s biodiversity: Toward a synergy of action between the Nyamusisi Reserve and its partners for the protection of the blue monkey

Voice of the Peasant to train and inform citizens, a commitment to social and climate justice.

A strategic meeting to strengthen the coordination of conservation efforts

On September 15, 2025, an important meeting was held between the Management Committee of the Idjwi/Nyamusisi Reserve (CGRI) and the Board of Directors of the Kahimano Foundation for Development (FOKAD) at the CGRI’s provincial offices on Hippodrome Avenue, in the commune of Ibanda. This session made it possible to consolidate the existing partnership, particularly around the flagship project of constructing monuments and busts of the Bulorero blue monkey. This project is being carried out with the support of the two traditional chiefs of Idjwi, Their Honorable Mwami Rubenga and Mwami Ntambuka, who approved its guidelines. The financing of this monument and bust construction project is being undertaken by FOKAD and the two chiefs, with funding from Primate Expertise PEX.

An inclusive, but well-regulated conservation effort

The CGRI praised the initiatives of FOKAD and the PEX organization, emphasizing their respect for conservation standards and established traditional procedures. While remaining open to other partners interested in working within the Nyamusisi Reserve, the committee reminded that any initiative must align with the authority of the CGRI and the traditional leadership of the two Bamis. This approach is intended to prevent disorganized action and to ensure sustainable, coordinated conservation of wildlife, particularly emblematic species such as the blue monkey.

Toward a common plan for 2026

A working session is planned for the last quarter of 2025 in order to assess current progress and develop action perspectives for 2026. The CGRI encourages stronger and more coordinated involvement of both current and future actors, within a spirit of mutual respect, transparency, and shared vision for the preservation of Idjwi’s natural heritage.
