Valuing Natural Heritage for a Green Economy: Bugoma and Greater Masaka at the Heart of Sustainable Tourism

Voix du Paysan – Educating and informing citizens: a commitment to social and climate justice.

In a spirit of responsible development, the Inclusive Green Economy Network East Africa (IGEN-EA) recently coordinated a workshop to disseminate research findings on the tourism potential of two key regions in Uganda: the Bugoma Central Forest, located in Kikuube district, and the Greater Masaka sub-region. The studies highlighted the ecological, cultural, and economic wealth of these relatively untapped areas, emphasizing their strategic role in promoting sustainable tourism.

The findings underscored the importance of preserving these natural areas while integrating them into environmentally friendly tourism circuits that benefit local communities. Bugoma, with its exceptional biodiversity, and Greater Masaka, rich in traditions and landscapes, could become engines of green growth if protected and inclusively promoted.

The workshop brought together local, national, and regional stakeholders around a shared vision: to develop tourism rooted in sustainability, social justice, and community participation. Discussions also focused on the policies needed to support such initiatives and attract green investment.

As a regional network, IGEN-EA is dedicated to promoting an inclusive green economy in East Africa. Its mission is to bring together voices from civil society and the private sector to support sustainable economic practices in agriculture, energy, tourism, and natural resource management. Through research, advocacy, and partnerships, IGEN-EA envisions an East Africa where prosperity aligns with equity, ecology, and resilience.
