Fishermen on ecological alert
On the shores of Lake Kivu, fishermen fear the destabilization of the aquatic ecosystem. The rise of gas exploitation projects threatens the survival of local species, already weakened by pollution. “Our nets come back emptier and emptier,” some say, concerned for their future. They fear that industrial activity will alter water quality and reduce fish breeding areas.
Farmers fear the impact on the land
Around the lake, farmers are concerned that infrastructure works and the risk of toxic leaks could affect soil fertility. “The land here is all we have,” they say. They also highlight the danger of increased competition for water—essential for their crops—if gas exploitation changes the lake’s levels or quality.
Herders facing social disruption
Herders are worried about the demographic pressure that could result from a massive influx of workers into the region. “Our pastures are already shrinking,” some say. They also fear heightened tensions over land, as well as conflicts between industrial operators and local communities over land rights.
The development dilemma
For herders too, the choice is a difficult one: accept exploitation in exchange for roads, electricity, and jobs… or preserve their ancestral way of life. Many denounce the lack of consultation. “They talk about us, without us,” they lament. This dilemma—between economic progress and respect for social and ecological balance—remains unresolved.
Faced with the intertwined challenges of gas, the environment, and social justice, the lakeside communities of Lake Kivu are calling for inclusive, transparent, and fair governance.
