John Sultan Toly Warns: How the U.S. Is Funding Its Own Climate Destruction

Voix du Paysan – Committed journalism serving citizens and climate justice.

At a time when the climate crisis demands bold decisions, the United States is heading down a troubling path. The U.S. government is preparing to waste up to 10 billion per year to keep unprofitable coal plants running—despite utilities having already planned their shutdown. Backed by the Department of Energy, this move defies both environmental and economic logic, raising household bills and worsening pollution.

In an interview with www.dec-rdc.org during visits to Mahagi, Irumu, and Djugu territories in Ituri province near Lake Albert, John Sultan Toly, a young community organizer and climate justice advocate, strongly condemned this policy: This is not about energy security—it’s climate sabotage funded with public money. He highlights the irony of cutting7 billion from the Solar for All program, which aims to provide rooftop solar power to millions of low-income families. It’s a political choice that shifts focus from progress to regression, from public health to polluting profits.

There is, however, a glimmer of hope: major banks are turning away from fossil fuels. In 2025, the top six U.S. banks cut fossil fuel financing by 25%. Morgan Stanley reduced its fossil loans by 54%, and even JPMorgan is scaling back. This shift—driven as much by economic reality as by climate pressure—proves that the future lies in clean energy.

According to John Sultan Toly, this shift should inspire countries in the Global South: “We must not repeat the mistakes of polluting powers.” In the Democratic Republic of Congo, he urges resistance to destructive fossil fuel projects like those planned near Lake Albert and calls for investments in sustainable alternatives. The fight for truth—and against climate corruption—begins with community organization and reliable information.
