Idjwi facing a double scourge, climate change and food crisis threaten local resilience

A farming voice to train and inform citizens, a commitment to social and climate justice

An island territory on the frontline of the ecological crisis

Located in the heart of Lake Kivu, the island territory of Idjwi is bearing the full brunt of climate change. Increased erosion, rising temperatures, and irregular rainfall compromise harvests and weaken the livelihoods of local populations, already affected by limited access to resources. This reality places the communities of Idjwi among the most vulnerable in the face of an ecological crisis for which they are not responsible.

Food insecurity worsening year after year

Land degradation, combined with demographic pressure and the absence of resilience infrastructure, is worsening food insecurity. Many families struggle to produce or access sufficient and balanced food. Faced with this urgency, local voices are calling for an adapted response, based on climate justice, strengthened agricultural capacities, and sustainable protection of the island environment.

The action of www.dec-rdc.org close to the communities

Aware of the scale of the challenge, the organization www.dec-rdc.org has gone to meet the local communities of Idjwi to document, listen, and co-construct solutions with the inhabitants. Its participatory approach aims to value indigenous knowledge, while advocating for inclusive public policies capable of strengthening climate and food resilience in this region that is as magnificent as it is fragile.
