From the Forced Rural Exodus to the Suffocation of Cities: How Armed Conflicts Are Disrupting Rural Congo and Fueling an Urban Crisis with Dramatic Consequences

Voix du Paysan: Educating and Informing Citizens for Social and Climate Justice.

For several decades, armed conflicts affecting various regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have profoundly disrupted rural life. In many provinces, insecurity has forced communities to abandon their farmlands, livestock, and traditional economic activities in search of safety in urban centers. This massive displacement further weakens rural areas, significantly reduces national food production, and deprives millions of families of their livelihoods. Rural communities, once the backbone of food supply for many cities, are gradually losing their productive workforce to urban areas that are already struggling with major structural challenges.

The continuous influx of displaced people into Congolese cities is placing unprecedented pressure on infrastructure and social services. Due to the shortage of adequate housing, many families settle in informal settlements lacking proper access to clean water, sanitation, and electricity. Unemployment and underemployment continue to rise, while competition for scarce economic opportunities deepens poverty and inequality. This social crisis is compounded by a growing food security threat: declining agricultural production in rural areas is driving up the prices of basic food commodities, making adequate nutrition increasingly unaffordable for the most vulnerable urban populations.

The environmental consequences are equally alarming. Uncontrolled urban expansion contributes to deforestation, the occupation of high-risk areas, and the degradation of peri-urban ecosystems. Waste accumulates, green spaces disappear, and disasters linked to flooding become more frequent. Armed conflicts, therefore, extend far beyond their immediate security impacts; they fuel a vicious cycle in which rural abandonment, urban overcrowding, food insecurity, and environmental degradation reinforce one another. For the Democratic Republic of the Congo, restoring peace and revitalizing rural development are more essential than ever to ensuring a stable, resilient, and sustainable future.
