Degassing of Kabuno Gulf: Health Threat and Call to Action – Emmanuel Ndimwiza Warns of the Risks for Lake Kivu Communities

“Voix du Paysan” to Educate and Inform Citizens: A Commitment to Social and Climate Justice.

The degassing of Kabuno Gulf, the western arm of Lake Kivu, is raising growing concern among environmental experts. Emmanuel Ndimwiza, a young researcher in environmental sociology, warns of the potential impacts of this operation on the health of lakeside communities. The gas trapped at the bottom of this part of the lake contains high concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane. If not properly managed, the degassing could release toxic emissions, causing respiratory issues, headaches, or in the worst-case scenario, catastrophic events similar to the Lake Nyos disaster in Cameroon. The health of fishermen, women, and children living along the shores is at serious risk.

For Emmanuel Ndimwiza, the only sustainable path forward is one based on transparency and prevention. He advocates for the establishment of a community alert system, accessible public information sessions, and technical equipment that ensures a gradual, safe degassing process monitored by independent experts. He stresses the importance of involving local communities, strengthening their capacity to understand the risks, and preparing them to respond effectively. Schools, community radios, and local committees must be mobilized to make prevention a collective habit.

In conclusion, Emmanuel Ndimwiza urges Congolese authorities to reinforce environmental policies and require thorough impact assessments before any intervention. He calls on the companies involved to uphold the precautionary principle, make data about the degassing process publicly available, and contribute to the resilience of lakeside populations. Lastly, he appeals to citizens to organize into ecological monitoring networks and raise their voices. Lake Kivu is a fragile shared resource; protecting it is a collective responsibility.
