Voix du Paysan to Educate and Inform Citizens: A Commitment to Social and Climate Justice.
Freshwater ecosystems are home to about 10% of all known species on Earth. These environments—including rivers, lakes, wetlands, and streams—provide essential resources not only to wildlife but also to human communities worldwide. Their rich biodiversity plays a key role in ecological balance and sustaining livelihoods.
However, a recent study co-published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reveals a worrying reality: one quarter of freshwater animal species are now at risk of extinction. This alarming figure highlights serious threats facing these ecosystems, such as pollution, habitat loss, overexploitation of water, and the accelerating effects of climate change, all driving the decline of freshwater biodiversity.
This study represents the largest global assessment of freshwater animals ever conducted on the IUCN Red List. It underscores the urgent need for targeted conservation actions and sustainable management of freshwater resources. Protecting these species and their habitats is vital not only for biodiversity but also for the health and resilience of ecosystems that support millions of people worldwide.
