Mohamed Aboutrika reste, en 2025, une figure emblématique du football africain et une légende vivante en Égypte. Grâce à son intelligence de jeu et sa précision chirurgicale, Aboutrika a été le cauchemar des plus grandes stars africaines. L’Égypte, emmenée par lui, a infligé des défaites cuisantes à la Côte d’Ivoire de Didier Drogba, au Cameroun de Samuel Eto’o, et même à la RDC. Son but face au Cameroun en finale de la CAN 2008 reste une masterclass dans l’histoire du football africain, scellant la domination des Pharaons dans les années 2000.
Mais sa carrière n’a pas été exempte de turbulences. Son engagement politique lui a valu admiration et controverse. En 2017, il est condamné par contumace par les autorités égyptiennes, accusé de soutenir les Frères musulmans, ce qu’il a toujours nié. Depuis, il vit en exil au Qatar, loin des terrains, mais proche des caméras comme consultant sur beIN Sports, où son analyse continue de captiver.
