Voix du Paysan – Informing and Empowering Citizens for Social and Climate Justice.
The warning issued by the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) forecast of heavy rainfall goes far beyond a routine press statement. It underscores an undeniable reality: climate change is turning extreme weather events into recurring humanitarian crises. In the face of this growing threat, anticipation is no longer optional—it is an imperative.
Through this appeal, FENRAD urges the Abia State Government and authorities across Nigeria’s South-East to strengthen disaster preparedness and early response mechanisms. Clearing drainage systems, raising public awareness, improving urban planning, ensuring the rapid dissemination of early warnings, and enhancing coordination among emergency services are all practical measures capable of saving lives before floodwaters strike.
The organization also emphasizes that climate resilience cannot rest solely on governments. Local authorities, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, schools, the private sector, and individual citizens all have critical roles to play in safeguarding vulnerable communities. Responsible waste management, ecosystem restoration, and climate-resilient infrastructure have become fundamental pillars of public safety.
Beyond Nigeria, FENRAD’s message serves as a powerful wake-up call for the entire African continent. As climate-related disruptions continue to intensify, the nations that invest in prevention, adaptation, and resilience will be those best positioned to reduce human suffering and economic losses. Today, forecasting, preparedness, and collective action remain the most effective response to the climate challenges of tomorrow.
