On Lake Kivu, water transport is a major pillar of mobility and trade between the Congolese and Rwandan shores. However, the growing number of boats, combined with the lack of strict ecological measures, poses serious environmental threats. Water pollution, fuel leaks, waste discharge, and noise pollution are all factors degrading water quality and weakening the lake’s unique biodiversity. In light of this, the question of social and environmental responsibility among operators has become urgent.
A silent decline in lake biodiversity
Lake Kivu is home to a distinctive range of flora and fauna that are now at risk. Fish species, already affected by overfishing, are now suffering from habitat degradation caused by unregulated transport activities. Breeding zones are being disrupted, certain species are becoming rare, and the ecological balance is under threat. This constant pressure on the ecosystem also endangers food security for the lakeside communities who depend on it.
Towards sustainable and responsible transport
It has become essential for lake transport companies to adopt environmentally respectful practices, including waste management, proper engine maintenance, protection of designated zones, and crew awareness. Authorities must establish clear regulations while supporting the transition to green transport on Lake Kivu. Only under these conditions can economic development progress without sacrificing the lake’s ecological richness.
