Gorilla Killed in Kahuzi-Biega National Park: A Crime Against a World Heritage Treasure That Underscores the Urgent Need to Save Congo’s Biodiversity

Voix du Paysan – Informing and Empowering Citizens for Social and Climate Justice

The killing of a Grauer’s gorilla inside Kahuzi-Biega National Park, in Kalehe Territory, is yet another alarming reminder of the fragility of biodiversity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In a statement issued on 19 July 2026, the Park’s management strongly condemned the incident, which occurred on 10 July near the Musisi marshland, and announced that the suspected perpetrator had been arrested and transferred to the judicial authorities in Walikale for prosecution.

Far more than an isolated criminal act, this incident has struck one of the country’s most iconic and fully protected species. The Grauer’s gorilla, already under severe pressure from poaching, deforestation, and armed conflict, represents an irreplaceable natural heritage for both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the global community. Every individual lost weakens decades of conservation efforts aimed at ensuring the survival of this critically important species.

The Park’s statement also highlights that the deteriorating security situation since February 2025 has significantly undermined its capacity to protect wildlife. The suspension of ranger patrols across several sectors has created a security vacuum that is increasingly exploited by illegal actors, placing not only wildlife but also the entire Kahuzi-Biega ecosystem at greater risk.

In the face of this continuing threat, the arrest of the suspect must mark the beginning of a strong and exemplary judicial response rather than a one-time reaction. Safeguarding Kahuzi-Biega National Park requires renewed commitment from the Congolese government, conservation partners, local communities, and security institutions to ensure that Grauer’s gorillas—living symbols of the nation’s extraordinary natural heritage—do not disappear under the combined weight of insecurity and impunity.
