Voix du Paysan pour former et informer les citoyens : un engagement pour la justice sociale et climatique
Cultural tourism in the Great Lakes region of Africa presents a strategic opportunity to promote both tangible and intangible heritage. The island territory of Idjwi, located in the heart of Lake Kivu, holds a unique cultural wealth, shaped by ancestral traditions, ritual dances, authentic crafts, and a preserved communal lifestyle. This heritage offers strong potential for sustainable local development through culturally-driven tourism.
However, several challenges hinder the development of cultural tourism in Idjwi. These include limited hospitality infrastructure, a lack of professional training in tourism, low visibility of the destination, and accessibility constraints. Moreover, risks of cultural exploitation or degradation require ethical and community-based management approaches.
Despite these issues, promising perspectives emerge through policies focused on cultural valorization, capacity building for local actors, promotion of responsible tourism, and regional integration. If guided by an inclusive and respectful vision, cultural tourism in Idjwi could become a vehicle for peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development across the Great Lakes region.
