Just Energy Transition: Women on the Frontline to Reclaim Control of Energy and End Corporate Dominance

Voix du Paysan pour former et informer les citoyens : un engagement pour la justice sociale et climatique.

Across various regions of the world, women’s movements are increasingly emerging as key actors in the fight for a just energy transition. Their demand is clear: renewable energy systems should not be controlled by large profit-driven corporations but should instead be owned, managed, and governed by communities themselves. For these women, access to energy is a fundamental right that must contribute to local development, poverty reduction, and collective well-being.

This mobilization is driven by a growing concern that the shift to renewable energy could replicate the same inequalities that have long characterized the fossil fuel sector if local populations remain excluded from decision-making processes and economic benefits. Women therefore advocate for decentralized energy systems that bring energy production closer to communities, create local jobs, and strengthen household economic resilience, particularly in rural areas that are often marginalized and underserved.

Beyond the energy issue itself, this struggle is also about social justice, gender equality, and economic democracy. By calling for the social and community ownership of renewable energy infrastructure, these women are promoting a development model in which the benefits generated by energy remain within local territories. Their vision paves the way for an ecological transition that goes beyond changing energy sources and seeks to transform power relations by placing citizens—and especially women—at the center of the decisions that shape their future.
